Chapter 14

One of the worst feelings in the world was watching Beech put the cuffs on Georgie and not being able to do anything to stop it from happening. Georgie saw me sitting in front of Beech’s car and he held my stare. I knew what he was thinking as he looked at me. I was supposed to be helping him. I was supposed to getting him out of this. He looked away, to the ground, almost as though he wasn’t surprised. That bothered me more than I cared to admit. It felt like being sucker punched by a friend.

The trip was silent back to the station. I couldn’t keep my hands from doing things. I twisted my seatbelt. I rubbed my palms on my thighs. I kept tugging at my hair. It got so bad that Beech reached out and took my left hand in his, giving it a squeeze. If it was anyone else, I would have assumed they were trying to be reassuring. Because it was Beech, I knew he was annoyed and was trying to get me to stop.

His hand was surprisingly warm, however. Calluses lines his palms but they weren’t so rough that it irritated my skin by any means. He let go a moment later and I realized he held on perhaps a moment too long. For some strange reason, I was compelled to look behind me, at Georgie, through my vanity mirror, just to see if he saw what happened. Georgie’s eyes locked with mine through the mirror, but whether he was watching because of Beech or because he was already pissed that I had been there during the arrest when I should have prevented such a thing, I didn’t know.

We got to the station ten minutes later.

Rigo, Irvine’s booking officer, greeted Beech with a friendly smile and nodded at me. A lot of times, I was ignored simply because I wasn’t an officer. Rigo always acknowledged me in some way or the other, which made me feel more comfortable here.

Beech was there during the entire booking process. It wasn’t necessary simply because Georgie was a male and Rigo was a male, but I knew Beech liked to be involved in his arrests as much as possible. I waited in Rigo’s office during the booking. Instead of locking him up in a holding cell, Beech took him to an interrogation room.

“Want in?” he asked as Rigo led Georgie to the room.

“Really?” To say I was surprised he offered was an understatement. Interrogation was Beech’s domain. He didn’t let many people in the box with him as he questioned them.

He nodded. “Wouldn’t have asked if I wasn’t serious.” He perked his brow, waiting for an answer.

“Sure, yeah.” I nodded once. “Absolutely.”

I nearly fell over myself trying to get up. Rigo came in to tell us he was ready and Beech and I headed there in silence. I wasn’t sure if there was some sort of strategy we needed to adhere to, if he had something specific in mind, so I decided to bite my tongue and observe in silence.
